on skulls

I’m drawn toward skulls because I’m fascinated by the natural proportions of the anatomical body—ones that have been mathematized but are so intuitive to me. The length from the eye socket to the nasal cavity is the same as the length of the nasal cavity itself, which is the same as the length of the first part of the horn, just before it curves. There’s a natural harmony there. And it’s so satisfying to my body to draw because my body is made of the same harmonic proportions. I intuitively know when a skull I’ve painted is “right” because the body that paints it shares its symmetries.
